Senior Cost Engineer – Department of Water & Sanitation Jan 2012 – July 2017
• Managing cost estimates for all infrastructure projects in the department including dams, bulk water supply and wastewater
• Leading a team of eight quantity surveyors working on up to 16 concurrent projects most with budgets greater than NZ$ 10m (ZAR 100m)
• Aligning project schedules with cost estimates and helping project managers detect and mitigate changes in project scope, duration or cost
• Directly managing up to two projects at any one time, including the construction of a concrete reservoir and water treatment plant with a team of 54 people
• Capturing project costs and schedules within the department’s financial management system, and reporting to internal and external stakeholders including the deputy director of the department

• Adapted aspects of the weir design to suit the site topography and reduce the risk of flooding. Constructed a large river diversion to prevent interruptions to construction

Quantity Surveyor – De Hoop Dam, Roossenekal Jul 2009 – Jul 2011
This dam has 2km of concrete wall, is 95m high with a total construction budget of NZ$ 340m (ZAR 3.4b). It used innovative immersion-vibrated roller-compacted concrete (RCC) for which the department was recognised as a world-leader and received two Fulton awards.
• Worked as part of a team of quantity surveyors on the dam project
• Reviewed all relevant documentation to determine the scope of the project, prepared quote requests for suppliers and analysed and compared their responses
• Calculated the cost of labour and materials and prepared comprehensive estimates for review by project and department heads and clients
• Organised and ran meetings to clarify requirements and solve issues that might adversely affect the accuracy of cost estimates
• Part of a team that successfully planned and executed the highest rate of concrete pour ever achieved in South Africa, peaking at 132,000 m3 / month. This achievement was instrumental in the department receiving the Fulton awards

Quantity Surveyor – M&T Development 2007 – 2008
• Completed project cost estimations predominantly for residential and commercial property developments with a value up to NZ$ 13m (ZAR 130m)
• Prepared tender documents, negotiated contracts with suppliers and sub-contractors, and refined the selection criteria for contractors
• Conducted site visits to assess progress, monitored compliance with quality standards and initiated additional checks to ensure high-quality outcomes
• Developed new worksheets to improve calculations of materials costs and reduce turnaround time on their delivery
• Introduced new electronic measuring tools and associated software which produced more accurate estimates in a shorter timeframe
