Candy

We have tested Candy and it works well in both the 32- and 64-bit versions. We expect this to be our preferred operating system by year end.

The Windows 10 Home version is not generally encouraged, since the Home versions of Windows do not support full networking capability.

BuildSmart

BuildSmart requires Internet Explorer as its host, and this is supplied with Windows 10. There should be no compatibility problems.

Older tools were aimed at .Net 3.5. However, newer tools are based on .Net 4.0. Most users will not be affected by this because of the prevalence of Windows 7 in the user base. Those on Windows XP need to install either 3.5 or 4.0 to make use of all or some of the tools.

Major construction companies are running Candy on Citrix in Dubai, Australia and in the UK.

There are many advantages to running in a virtual environment. From a Candy support and user experience point of view, Citrix solves the problem of low or intermittent bandwidth problems.

Low quality networks, especially WAN or VPN networks, can cause major interruptions and data loss for users. With a virtual desktop environment this problem is removed as Candy and its data runs on a server – the only data crossing the network is a ‘picture’ of the application running on the desktop.

Deploying Candy on a Citrix server is as easy as installing any simple application and making sure that the correct group of users is presented with a shortcut to the Candy application.

Candy is not packaged as an MSI, however the setup file can be controlled with command line parameters.

One common problem is that the default user desktop is offered with 256 colours and a restrictive screen resolution. This makes Candy very difficult to work with. For effective operation, 1024 x 768 with hi-colour (16-bit) is the absolute minimum.

Additionally, since Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, it is suggested that users are presented with a Windows 7 environment.

The advantage to IT management is centralised control of Candy and related data. Additionally, far less network infrastructure is required to run a terminal session than to run data live between the server and user’s desktop.

A disadvantage to users is that Candy tends to be updated at a much slower rate which means that enhancements do not reach users as quickly.

Over eighty percent of Candy users now validate their licenses online. This has removed much of the irritation of keeping Candy licenses registered.

Usually a Candy license needs to be validated every three or six months. The system will warn users two weeks before the cutoff date. To validate the license, simply press the Validate Online button on the warning dialog.

The computer will require access to the internet and more specifically access to the CCS license server. Some companies have IT policies that prevent this. However, usually this can be resolved by adding exceptions to the firewall.

Please email support@ccssa.com if specific information about domains or ip addresses is required.
